About Us

Number 12 bar & restaurant until recently was known as Le Rouen, and at the end of 2007 we decided to take the opportunity and bring the pub back to its former glory. My Brother & I already had one successful renovation project under our belts, having re-established the Surrey Tavern on Surrey Street as a successful city centre bar, so Le Rouen was a fresh new challenge.

We have tried to give 'Number 12' a contemporary take on the traditional public house. We have used its original features and restored them to help enhance the building’s architectural charm and character which had been lost in recent years. We’ve especially tried to be sympathetic to the traditional architecture of the grade two listed building, whilst also adding a modern edge. Through using calming colour schemes, streamlined furnishings and modern artwork to complement the already established quirky old-style walls and beamed ceilings, we have achieved a fresh but homely atmosphere and given the venue its own individual identity.

As well as the building receiving a complete overhaul, the name was also been revamped to fit with its more modern feel and surroundings. Renamed Number 12, Bar & Restaurant, we took inspiration from both the address, 12 Farmers’ Avenue, and the area which was traditionally dominated by Norwich’s cattle market. We felt it was important to be aware of the the building's long history as a pub, which stretches back to the 17th centuary.

The Surrey Tavern has also played a big part in the ideas behind Number 12. By developing the same business structure, we have created a similar relaxing environment for our customers to enjoy. The layout has been broken down into three key areas: the front bar which oozes the feeling of a traditional pub, perfect to sit back and gulp down a pint or munch on our home-made burgers; the back rooms which are more cosy and a relaxing environment to unwind; and thirdly the upstairs restaurant where diners can enjoy the contemporary menu as well as the views of Norwich castle.
